US Man Arrested After Alleged Attempt to Firebomb US Embassy in Israel
A dual US-German national has been deported from Israel and taken into custody in the US after allegedly attempting to attack the American embassy in Tel Aviv.Joseph Neumayer, a 28-year-old dual citizen of the United States and Germany, has been arrested by US authorities following his deportation from Israel, where he allegedly tried to carry out an attack on the US embassy in Tel Aviv.
According to the US Department of Justice, Neumayer was initially detained by Israeli police after a suspicious backpack, allegedly containing explosive devices, was discovered near the embassy. Upon arrival in the US on Sunday at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, he was taken into custody and appeared in court the same day. He is currently being held in jail.
Attorney General Pam Bondi stated, “This defendant is charged with planning a devastating attack targeting our embassy in Israel, threatening death to Americans, and the life of President Trump.”
Authorities report that Neumayer arrived in Israel in April and approached the embassy on May 19 carrying a dark-colored backpack. He allegedly spat on an embassy guard and fled, leaving the backpack behind. Inside were three Molotov cocktails—improvised incendiary weapons designed to ignite upon impact.
Israeli police located and arrested Neumayer later at his hotel. US officials say he had previously posted online threats, including pledges to "burn down the embassy in Tel Aviv" and calls for "death to America" and "death to Americans." He also allegedly threatened to assassinate former President Donald Trump via social media posts linked to him.
If convicted, Neumayer faces up to 20 years in prison.
His arrest comes shortly after another incident involving violence against US diplomatic staff. Last week, two Israeli embassy employees were fatally shot outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C. The victims—Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Lynn Milgrim—were attending an event when a gunman opened fire.
Authorities identified the shooter as Elias Rodriguez, a 30-year-old man from Chicago, who reportedly shouted “Free Palestine” during the attack. He has been arrested and charged.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is scheduled to attend a memorial service in Israel for the slain embassy workers on Monday.
