Universities in Punjab Postpone Exams Amid Indo-Pak Tensions

In the wake of rising tensions between India and Pakistan, several universities across Punjab have postponed examinations and issued precautionary advisories for students.

Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Jalandhar, has extended the postponement of its examinations for all affiliated colleges in the region until May 17. Earlier, exams scheduled for May 8, 9, and 10 had been deferred through a prior order. Students have been advised to stay updated through the university’s official portal.

Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala, announced the closure of the university until May 18, citing safety concerns. In an official notice, the institute said a revised examination schedule will be issued based on how the situation evolves. Students wishing to return home have been granted permission to do so.

IK Gujral Punjab Technical University (IKGPTU) has also postponed its exams scheduled from May 8 to May 10. “The revised schedule for the examinations will be announced at least five days in advance,” stated a notice issued by the Controller of Examinations. Students are advised to monitor the university website for further updates.

Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot, has deferred all annual and semester exams — both theory and practical — that were scheduled for May 9, 10, and 11. The university assured students that new dates will be communicated in due course.

Meanwhile, Lovely Professional University (LPU), Phagwara, has given hostellers the option to return to their hometowns. Students choosing to leave will be allowed to take their end-term exams online, subject to government regulations. "The campus remains fully operational. Examination and academic activities will continue as per the original schedule starting May 12," LPU stated in a notice to students. The university has also issued a helpline number — 01824-520150 — for student queries.

These precautionary steps come amid heightened alert in the region following recent cross-border hostilities and security measures taken by the state government.
