Tensions Rise in Punjab as Farmers Defy Restrictions to Protest at Shambhu
Tensions escalated across Punjab on Tuesday as thousands of farmers, mobilized by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, pushed ahead with their plan to hold a dharna at Shambhu, despite heavy police deployment and sealed interstate borders.
Farmers from regions including Moga and Jagraon began assembling in large numbers, determined to march forward even though local authorities had denied permission for any protest gathering.
The agitation is a response to the March 19 police crackdown, during which several farmer leaders were detained following a meeting with Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Chandigarh. Protesters are demanding compensation for items they claim went missing during the crackdown. According to the farmers, those items were later traced to individuals allegedly linked to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders and members of the police force.
The protest marks a renewed wave of mobilization among Punjab’s agricultural community, underscoring growing frustration over what they view as state repression and a lack of accountability.
