Punjab DGP Issues Ultimatum: End Street-Level Drug Availability by May 31 or Face Action

Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on Tuesday issued a strong warning to district police chiefs, directing them to eliminate drug availability on the streets by May 31 or be prepared to face consequences.

Speaking at a high-level meeting with senior police officials—including Inspector Generals (IGs), Deputy Inspector Generals (DIGs), Commissioners of Police (CPs), and Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs)—DGP Yadav emphasized that accountability has been clearly fixed for officers at every level. “CPs, SSPs, DSPs, and SHOs will be held responsible if they fail to eradicate drugs from their areas,” he said.

Accompanied by Special DGP (Internal Security) RN Dhoke, ADGP (Anti-Narcotics Task Force) Nilabh Kishore, and ADGP (Law and Order) Naresh Arora, Yadav stated that officer performance would be rigorously reviewed after May 31, based on professional benchmarks, intelligence inputs, and public feedback.

“Officers delivering results will be rewarded. Those falling short will face strict action,” he warned.

Yadav clarified that no fixed targets had been assigned, but the ultimate goal was clear: to dismantle drug supply chains across the state. CPs and SSPs have already been directed to investigate both forward and backward linkages in all cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

He also highlighted the use of advanced technology in tracing major drug networks, particularly those using virtual numbers to avoid detection. “We’ve developed a foolproof strategy to track down such offenders,” he added.

The DGP said that Punjab Police is actively targeting 755 identified drug hotspots through coordinated cordon-and-search operations. Furthermore, various departments—including health and education—are collaborating in a comprehensive effort to eliminate drug abuse from the state.

Yadav urged the public to support the campaign by reporting drug-related activity anonymously via the "Safe Punjab Anti-Drug" helpline at 97791-00200.
