Punjab BJP Chief Seeks Special Category Status for State Amid Border Challenges

Ludhiana/Chandigarh, May 12: Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar on Sunday urged the Central government to consider granting Punjab special category status, citing economic constraints resulting from its sensitive border location with Pakistan.

Jakhar emphasized that the state has long suffered economic setbacks due to its strategic positioning, which has led to restricted cross-border trade and persistent security challenges. “Punjab requires a structured and sustained economic package to offset the limitations imposed by its proximity to the international border,” he said.

The demand was raised during an all-party meeting held in Chandigarh on Saturday, chaired by Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria and attended by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and leaders from various political parties.

Speaking after visiting victims of the recent drone attack in Ferozepur—now under treatment at Ludhiana’s Dayanand Medical College and Hospital—Jakhar called for collective political action to secure central assistance. He highlighted the urgency of the issue, stressing that industries, agriculture, and border communities in Punjab have endured “unique hardships.”

“Trade routes remain limited, investment faces structural hesitations, and farmers often bear the brunt of uncertainties,” he said. “Our youth deserve opportunities that match their potential, and that requires tailored support and affirmative policy interventions.”

Jakhar pointed out that a special category status, similar to the one granted to Himachal Pradesh, would provide Punjab preferential treatment in central resource allocation and ensure long-term growth. He reiterated that ongoing border-zone restrictions and security risks necessitate a special economic framework for the state.
