Papalpreet Singh Re-Arrested After NSA Detention Ends; Linked to Ajnala Police Station Attack Case

The Punjab Police on Wednesday re-arrested Papalpreet Singh, a close associate of Khalistan sympathiser and Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, immediately after his release from Assam’s Dibrugarh jail. Papalpreet had completed a year-long detention under the National Security Act (NSA).

Following his release, Papalpreet was taken into custody in connection with the 2023 Ajnala police station attack and transported to Amritsar. Amritsar (Rural) SSP Maninder Singh confirmed the arrest, stating that Papalpreet would be presented before the Ajnala subdivisional court on Thursday.

This arrest could signal the next steps in the legal proceedings against Amritpal Singh, whose own NSA detention is set to expire on April 23. Authorities suggest he too may be arrested in the Ajnala attack case following his release, though no official confirmation has been made regarding fresh charges.

With Papalpreet's re-arrest, Amritpal is now the sole detainee remaining at Dibrugarh jail, where he had been held alongside nine associates since 2023. The others, including Varinder Singh alias Fauji, Basant Singh, Bhagwant Singh alias Pradhan Mantri Bajeke, Gurmeet Singh Gill alias Gurmeet Bukkanwala, Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal alias Kulwant Singh, Gurinderpal Singh Aujla alias Guri Aujla, Harjeet Singh alias Chacha, and Sarabjeet Singh Kalsi alias Daljeet Singh Kalsi, have already been repatriated to Punjab.

Papalpreet, who was first arrested in April 2023 from the Kathunangal area of Amritsar during a crackdown on the ‘Waris Punjab De’ outfit, is believed to have served as a key advisor to Amritpal Singh. A known figure in Sikh activism, he has long advocated for the Khalistan movement and previously worked as a freelance journalist. In 2015, he was arrested on sedition charges following a speech delivered at the Sarbat Khalsa.
