PSHRC Takes Suo Moto Notice of Doctor Shortage in Muktsar

Chandigarh, May 12: The Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) has taken suo moto cognizance of a news report published in The Tribune titled "Doctor shortage ails healthcare in Muktsar".

The report shed light on the alarming state of healthcare services in Muktsar district, where only a fraction of the sanctioned medical positions are currently filled. Most notably, rural areas are severely affected, with just 17 doctors serving against the 99 posts sanctioned—amounting to barely 17% staffing in the villages.

Responding to the concerns raised, a PSHRC spokesperson stated that the commission has sought a detailed report from the Director, Health and Family Welfare, Punjab. The department has been asked to submit its findings and response at least one week prior to the next hearing, scheduled for July 7.

The Commission’s action underscores growing concern about the state's rural healthcare infrastructure and the urgent need for remedial measures.
