Muktsar Launches Night-Time Cleaning Drive to Tackle Sanitation Woes

In an effort to improve cleanliness and avoid traffic-related disruptions, the Muktsar Municipal Council has initiated a special night-time cleaning drive across the city.

Acting on the directions of Deputy Commissioner Abhijeet Kaplish, sanitation workers have started sweeping and cleaning streets during nighttime hours, aiming to ensure a cleaner environment by morning. The initiative is being led by Rajneesh Girdhar, Executive Officer (EO) of the Municipal Council.

“Daytime traffic makes it difficult to clean the roads effectively, so we have shifted operations to the night,” Girdhar said. He urged residents to cooperate by segregating wet and dry waste and avoiding the use of banned plastic carry bags. “A clean and beautiful city can only be achieved with public support,” he added.

Last month, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Jagdeep Singh Kaka Brar from Muktsar contributed to the cause by donating two tractor-trailers to a local NGO. He used approximately ₹15 lakh saved from his salary over three years for the donation and pledged an additional ₹50,000 per month to support cleanliness efforts in the town.

Despite these positive steps, major sanitation issues persist in several areas of Muktsar. Overflowing sewage and unattended garbage continue to plague parts of the city, with the road leading to the Civil Hospital particularly affected—posing serious difficulties for patients and healthcare workers.

While the night-time cleaning initiative has received praise from locals as a proactive step, many residents emphasize the need for a more comprehensive and long-term approach to solving sanitation problems.

It is worth noting that the responsibility for sewage and water supply lies with the Water Supply and Sanitation Department, highlighting the need for inter-departmental coordination to ensure lasting improvement.
