Leaked Chats Reveal Alleged Plot to Target Leaders, Spark Violence in Punjab
Leaked screenshots and audio recordings from a social media group supporting jailed Member of Parliament Amritpal Singh have raised alarm over alleged plans to target prominent political figures and incite violence in Punjab.
The group, which reportedly includes over 600 members, has discussed possible attacks on Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Congress MP Ravneet Singh Bittu, Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia, and Parminder Singh Talwara — a close associate of the late Deep Sidhu, founder of “Waris Punjab De.” These discussions reportedly took place following the recent extension of Amritpal Singh’s detention under the National Security Act (NSA), announced last Friday.
A senior police official said that all threats, whether public or private, are being treated with the utmost seriousness. Security agencies are now investigating the nature and credibility of the threats.
According to the leaked chats, some members expressed a willingness to sacrifice their lives for their cause — if their families were guaranteed safety. The revelations have intensified concerns over public safety and the potential for politically motivated violence in the state. Sources suggest that the group may be planning not only targeted attacks but also broader acts of unrest across Punjab.
Amritpal Singh, a self-styled preacher and vocal supporter of the pro-Khalistan movement, has been detained under the NSA since April 2023. His detention, which was due to end on April 22, has now been extended by another year. His supporters allege that political figures, particularly Congress MP Ravneet Singh Bittu, played a key role in his arrest. Bittu, who has previously faced threats, is the grandson of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, who was assassinated by terrorists in 1995.
In response to the leaked messages, Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu demanded swift action. “Khalistani elements associated with ‘Waris Punjab De’ must be arrested immediately. These individuals are plotting assassinations and spreading terror. The conspiracy has been laid bare through these leaked chats,” he said, adding, “The Centre will not allow anti-national forces to destabilise Punjab.”
Meanwhile, Amritpal Singh’s uncle, Sukhchain Singh, along with other family members, met officiating Jathedar of Akal Takht, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, in Amritsar on Sunday. After the meeting, Giani Gargaj condemned the extension of Amritpal’s detention, calling it a “violation of human rights.”
As investigations continue, authorities are maintaining heightened vigilance to ensure that no untoward incidents occur amid growing tensions in the region.
