Kapurthala Woman Rescued from Exploitation in Oman; Seechewal Calls for Action Against Trafficking Rackets

Cases of exploitation involving young women in West Asian countries are on the rise, with a disturbing incident recently emerging from Kapurthala. A young woman, lured to Oman by a friend under the false promise of a job opportunity, shared her harrowing experience upon her return to India.

With assistance from Rajya Sabha MP and environmentalist Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal, the woman was safely repatriated. She revealed that her friend, aware of her difficult financial situation, manipulated her into accepting a supposed well-paying job at a salon in Oman. However, upon arrival, the reality was starkly different.

Speaking from Nirmal Kutia, Sultanpur Lodhi, the woman described the inhumane living conditions she and others endured. Instead of working at a salon, she was forced into domestic labor, denied proper food, and subjected to cruel and degrading treatment. Her mobile phone was confiscated immediately, and even her limited personal funds were taken away. Along with several other trapped girls, she was held in confinement, stripped of any hope of returning home.

The victim made an emotional appeal to other young women, warning them against trusting overseas job offers, particularly in Arab countries, where promises often mask exploitation.

The victim's family, who accompanied her during the press interaction, expressed deep gratitude to Seechewal. They stated that without his intervention, her visa might have been forcibly extended, and she could have remained captive for another two years. Seechewal thanked the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy for their swift action and called for strict measures against the trafficking rackets preying on vulnerable women.

He urged the people of Punjab to stay vigilant and warned against the growing network of agents exploiting poverty and desperation to trap young women in exploitative conditions abroad.
