Grenade Attack Outside BJP Leader Manoranjan Kalia’s Residence in Jalandhar, CCTV Footage Shows Suspect Fleeing
A powerful explosion rocked the residence of senior BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia in Punjab’s Jalandhar district in the early hours of Monday. CCTV footage from the area shows a suspect arriving on an e-rickshaw and allegedly hurling a grenade before fleeing the scene.
Kalia, a former Punjab Cabinet minister and ex-president of the state BJP unit, is currently a member of the BJP's national executive. The blast occurred around 1 a.m. near Shastri Market, causing widespread panic in the neighborhood.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, the explosion caused significant damage to Kalia’s home. “The impact was so strong that a partition inside the house was severely damaged, kitchen windows were shattered, and a bathroom door was broken,” said Kalia. His SUV and the flooring near the entrance were also damaged in the blast.
Recounting the incident, Kalia said he was asleep when he heard the loud noise. Initially, he assumed it was a transformer blast due to overloading, but his driver informed him that it was an explosion. “I tried calling the police, but no one answered. I then sent my gunman to the police station,” Kalia said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Manpreet Singh confirmed that a forensic team is investigating the matter. "We are examining the CCTV trail to identify and track down the assailant," added Jalandhar Police Commissioner Dhanpreet Kaur.
This incident comes amid a series of recent explosions across Punjab, including attacks on police posts in Amritsar and Gurdaspur over the past few months. Just last month, a blast occurred outside a temple in Amritsar.
Authorities have intensified investigations and security measures in the wake of the growing frequency of such attacks.
