Future of Kartarpur Corridor Uncertain Amid Rising India-Pakistan Tensions

The future of the Kartarpur corridor hangs in the balance as tensions escalate between India and Pakistan following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. Despite the uncertainty, the corridor remained operational today, with pilgrims continuing their visits as usual. However, the Indian government has yet to announce whether it will maintain or suspend the project.

Sources suggest that the BJP-led Union Government is facing a difficult decision regarding the corridor. With Punjab’s Sikh community playing a critical role in the political landscape, any move to alter the corridor’s status could significantly affect the party's support base in the state. Given the deep religious significance of Kartarpur Sahib to Sikhs, the government is treading cautiously.

On the other hand, Pakistan risks losing substantial revenue if the corridor is shut down. It currently charges each pilgrim a USD 20 fee at the Pakistani Integrated Check Post (ICP), earning considerable income from the 200–400 pilgrims who cross daily, especially during weekends. Despite repeated Indian appeals to waive the fee, Pakistan has refused to do so.
