ETT Unemployed Teachers Clash with Police Near CM's Residence in Sangrur

A tense standoff unfolded today near the residence of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on the Sangrur-Patiala main road, as members of the 5994 ETT Unemployed Adhyapak Union clashed with police while marching to press for their long-pending appointment letters.

The protesting teachers, led by state union president Surinderpal Gurdaspur, were demanding immediate issuance of appointment letters for the remaining 3,300 Elementary Teacher Training (ETT) candidates. Gurdaspur stated that although the state government had announced 5,994 ETT posts, only 2,670 appointment letters have been issued so far.

The protest began near the Verka milk plant, from where union members began their march toward the CM’s residence. However, they were intercepted by police, leading to a scuffle. Protesters alleged that some among them sustained internal injuries during the altercation.

The sit-in was eventually called off after the administration assured the union of a meeting with the Chief Minister. Gurpreet Sama, the union’s state press secretary, warned that if the promised meeting is delayed or fails to materialize, the union would escalate its agitation.

The incident highlights the growing frustration among unemployed ETT teachers over delays in recruitment, and adds pressure on the Punjab government to expedite the process.
