DRI Inspector Among Eight Arrested in Major Cross-Border Drug Trafficking Bust in Amritsar
The CIA wing of the Amritsar police commissionerate has arrested a Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Inspector along with seven others for their alleged involvement in an international drug trafficking racket. The operation led to the seizure of over 4 kilograms of heroin.
Four separate FIRs have been registered in connection with the case at the Ranjit Avenue and Chheharta police stations. Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar identified the DRI officer as Manjit Singh, 24, a resident of Rohtak in Haryana. He, along with Ravi Kumar, 35, from Gandhi Nagar in Ferozepur, was allegedly aiding the drug network in exchange for quick money. A motorcycle used in the transportation of drugs was also confiscated during the operation.
“They were procuring heroin from across the border, and Ravi Kumar was in direct contact with smugglers based in foreign countries,” said Commissioner Bhullar. He added that six more individuals were apprehended following further investigation, all believed to be involved in both drug trafficking and hawala financing.
The other accused have been identified as:
-
Palwinder Singh, alias Tindu (34), from Dhanoa Khurd village
-
Rohit Sharma (34), from Harkrishan Nagar
-
Abhishek Singh (19), from Chogawan
-
Arshdeep Singh (19), from Baba Deep Singh Colony, Chheharta
-
Amit Kumar, alias Sonu (34), from Sunder Nagar
-
Satnam Singh (26), from Chhidan village in the Lopoke area
According to the police, these individuals were part of a secondary module of the drug smuggling ring. Preliminary investigations suggest that Amit Kumar was managing a hawala network that facilitated the cross-border drug trade.
Commissioner Bhullar noted that another suspect has been identified and is currently being traced. Authorities are now working to map the full extent of the network, including the suppliers, dealers, and buyers involved, and to determine the total volume of narcotics handled by the arrested individuals.
