Cross-Border Espionage Network Busted in Punjab; Two Arrested, Pakistani Embassy Official Booked

Malerkotla, Punjab — May 12: In a major breakthrough, Punjab Police have claimed to have dismantled a cross-border espionage network operating out of Malerkotla. Two individuals, including a 31-year-old widow, have been arrested in connection with the case, while a Pakistani national posted at the Pakistan embassy in New Delhi has also been named as an accused.

The operation was led by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gagan Ajit Singh, who acted on secret intelligence inputs during heightened tensions between India and Pakistan—prior to the recent ceasefire agreement.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Gujala, a resident of Chor Mohalla in Malerkotla currently residing with her father in Mohalla Bhaurian Wala near Delhi Gate, and Yameen Mohammad, also from Malerkotla. Both have been booked under Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and Sections 3, 4, and 5 of the Official Secrets Act for allegedly compromising India’s sovereignty and security.

According to officials, two mobile phones used in the transmission of classified information were seized from the accused.

Investigations revealed that Gujala came into contact with the Pakistani official during a visit to the Pakistan embassy in New Delhi in February 2025, while seeking a visa. She was allegedly recruited to supply sensitive information to Pakistan and received payments via UPI and mobile apps. Police say she had also distributed some of the funds to others, though the money trail is still being traced.

City 2 police, led by Yadwinder Singh, registered a formal case on Thursday following the intelligence input. The two accused were picked up from separate locations on Saturday.

SSP Gagan Ajit Singh confirmed that Gujala had received ₹30,000 from the Pakistani handler, who is also booked in the case.

Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said the main accused had leaked sensitive information, including Indian Army movements, to a handler in Pakistan. Interrogation of the main suspect led to the arrest of the second conduit in the espionage ring.

This development follows closely on the heels of another recent case cracked by the Amritsar (Rural) Police, which led to the arrest of Falaksher Masih and Suraj Masih for allegedly leaking visuals and sensitive data related to Army cantonments and air bases to Pakistan’s intelligence agencies.

Authorities say further investigation is ongoing to uncover additional links and operatives in the network.
