CM Mann Urges Opposition to Avoid Fear-Mongering, Emphasizes Peace and Responsible Politics
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday appealed to Opposition leaders to refrain from spreading fear and instead support the state’s journey towards peace and development. Speaking at a state-level event at Punjabi University to mark the 134th birth anniversary of Dr. BR Ambedkar, Mann emphasized the importance of responsible politics, especially in a state with a painful history of terrorism and violence.
“We have already lived through the dark days of bloodshed, bombs, and AK-47s. Punjab cannot afford to revisit that chapter,” Mann said, calling for political discourse that promotes unity rather than panic.
His remarks came a day after Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition, Partap Singh Bajwa, was booked by Punjab Police. Bajwa had claimed in a television interview that 50 hand grenades had been smuggled into the state, with 18 allegedly already used in terror-related incidents. The police registered a case against him for allegedly spreading misinformation that could endanger national security.
Taking a swipe at Bajwa, the Chief Minister said, “He made the claim, but now when asked for details about the remaining grenades, he’s lawyering up.” Mann urged political rivals to critique him and his government but avoid statements that could create fear among the public.
Addressing recent incidents that threaten communal harmony — including the defacement of a statue of Dr. Ambedkar — Mann warned that any attempts to disturb social peace would be met with strict action. “We will not tolerate those trying to break the social fabric of Punjab,” he asserted.
The Chief Minister also reiterated his government’s strong stance against the drug menace. He said properties linked to drug traffickers would continue to be demolished under the “bulldozer action” strategy, stating, “Their ill-gotten wealth is soaked in the blood of our youth.”
Highlighting efforts to improve education infrastructure, Mann spoke about the revival of Punjabi University, which was facing a financial crisis when the Aam Aadmi Party took over. “We are now providing Rs 30 crore per month to ensure the regular payment of faculty salaries and overall stability,” he added.
The Chief Minister concluded by stressing that progress, unity, and social harmony should be the shared goal for all political parties in the state.
