BSF Jawan Injured in IED Blast Near Pakistan Border in Gurdaspur

A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan sustained serious injuries after an improvised explosive device (IED) planted ahead of the border security fence exploded during an attempt to defuse it in Punjab's Gurdaspur district. The incident took place during the intervening night of April 8 and 9 while a routine area domination patrol was underway.

According to BSF officials, while the recovery of drones, weapons, and narcotics near the border fence has become increasingly common, the discovery of IEDs remains a rare but alarming development. The force has since issued an alert across the 553-kilometre-long Punjab border and is re-evaluating its patrolling protocols in light of the possibility of additional explosive devices being planted in the area.

During the patrol, BSF personnel detected suspicious objects well within Indian territory. On closer inspection, a suspected IED was found planted ahead of the fence—suggesting a deliberate attempt to target security personnel and civilians, particularly farmers who frequently pass through the area during daytime hours.

As troops worked to cordon off and sanitize the site, they uncovered a network of hidden wires in nearby fields, confirming the presence of multiple IEDs. While attempting to secure the area, one of the concealed explosive devices detonated, causing serious leg injuries to a BSF jawan.

Despite the blast, the patrol team successfully continued the operation, ensuring the area was secured and preventing further damage or loss of life. A technical and forensic analysis of the recovered IED components is currently underway, and authorities have stated that appropriate action will follow upon receiving the report.

Officials noted that the Punjab border has increasingly become a hotspot for drone incursions from across the border, used for smuggling narcotics, arms, ammunition, and counterfeit currency.
