BKU (Doaba) Leaders Placed Under House Arrest Ahead of Shambhu Protest
In a preemptive crackdown, police on Monday placed Bharatiya Kisan Union (Doaba) president Manjit Singh Rai and several other union leaders under house arrest ahead of a protest planned at Shambhu police station on Tuesday.
Among those detained at home were BKU (Doaba) Vice President Davinder Singh Sandhwan and General Secretary Satnam Singh Sahni. The police action began early in the morning around 5 a.m., as security forces moved to prevent the union's participation in the protest.
The protest, called by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), aims to condemn the alleged police brutality against farmers during the March 19 clashes at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders. Farmers had reportedly sustained injuries during these confrontations.
Leaders of BKU (Doaba) had planned to gather at the Ladowal toll plaza and travel together to the protest site. However, the pre-dawn detentions disrupted these plans.
The house arrests are part of a broader strategy by law enforcement to limit the mobilization of farmer groups and maintain control over protest activities, which continue to be a point of tension in the region.
