BBMB Employees Protest Against Punjab CM’s Call for Board Dissolution
Employees of the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) staged a protest on Tuesday against Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s recent demand to dissolve the board. The demonstrators raised slogans condemning the state government's stance, accusing it of undermining the board’s functioning and morale.
HS Rana, coordinator of the BBMB employee union, emphasized that the BBMB is nationally recognized for its efficiency in managing critical dam infrastructure. However, he said the board’s operations have been adversely affected by the Punjab Government’s approach.
Rana pointed out that the state has not contributed its share to the BBMB budget since January, disrupting routine activities and development work. Additionally, the generation bonus of BBMB employees has been halted following objections from the Punjab Government. He also alleged that state officials were increasingly interfering in the autonomous functioning of the board.
“If the state government continues this approach, employees from BBMB’s Nangal, Talwara, and Sundernagar projects will be compelled to escalate their protest,” Rana warned.
The situation highlights growing friction between the state government and the centrally administered BBMB, amid broader tensions over water and power sharing between Punjab and other states.
