Amritpal Singh’s Father Criticizes Punjab Government Over Extended NSA Detention
Tarsem Singh, father of jailed radical preacher and Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, on Sunday lashed out at the AAP-led Punjab government for extending his son’s detention under the National Security Act (NSA). He alleged that the state government views Amritpal as a political threat and is determined to keep him behind bars.
Amritpal Singh, 32, has been lodged in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail since his arrest on April 23, 2023. Following a recommendation from the Senior Superintendent of Police of Amritsar Rural, the Amritsar district magistrate issued a fresh order on April 17 to extend his detention under the NSA for another year.
Speaking to the media in Amritsar, Tarsem Singh strongly condemned the move, accusing the state government of bypassing legal norms. “Detaining Amritpal under the NSA for a third time is a blot on democracy,” he stated, alleging that the Punjab government is working in coordination with the Centre to suppress his son’s political ambitions.
Tarsem Singh claimed that the government is feeling “threatened” by Amritpal’s growing political influence. Amritpal had successfully contested the Lok Sabha elections last year as an Independent candidate and was elected as a Member of Parliament from Khadoor Sahib. According to his father, Amritpal wanted to bring people’s issues to the forefront but is being deliberately prevented from doing so.
He further accused the Punjab government of failing on all fronts and using undemocratic measures to silence dissenting voices.
