Delhi Court Issues Notices to Sonia and Rahul Gandhi in National Herald Case

A Delhi court on Friday issued notices to Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in connection with the National Herald money-laundering case.

Special Judge Vishal Gogne emphasized that the leaders had the “right to be heard,” particularly during the stage of cognisance of the chargesheet. “Right to be heard at any stage breathes life into a fair trial,” the judge remarked, while scheduling the next hearing for May 8.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) recently filed its chargesheet in the case. The probe stems from a complaint filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy on June 26, 2014, which was later taken cognisance of by a magistrate court.

The ED initiated its formal investigation in 2021, following the court's directive, and has since been examining allegations of financial irregularities linked to the acquisition of Associated Journals Ltd, the company that ran the now-defunct National Herald newspaper.
